35 too late for a new career in computer technology?
I’m 33 and thinking about going back to school, getting a degree in computer science, and starting a new career (I’ve been in the mortgage business and am ready to move on). Will computer/software companies be willing to hire someone in their mid-30s for an entry-level position if there are much younger applicants out there?

Many times you don’t actually need the degree. If you are already a computer whiz, you may be able to get a good job just with
your knowledge.
I don’t know where you live, but I see a lot
of online jobs available. Start digging in
online companies (even ask Yahoo) and see
what is bottom line education needed.

I think you’re better off getting a degree than going with a trade school to land a job.
The other thing is what do you plan on doing? Programming or tech support? Programming is offered at colleges but tech support is usually not. Trade schools would be a better bet. Of course it’s always better if you understand the computer and other things w/o having to learn it. I started out with PC as a hobby in middle school and figured hey, I can make money doing this for a living. For programming I think you either understand it or not. I’m not a good with programming while others just pick it up quickly.
What I would do first is to search for jobs in your area using monster, hotjobs, craigslist and such. See how much entry level jobs come up. With the market the way it is now and if it doesn’t improve in 2 years you’ll probably be competing against people w/ some experience which will make it even tougher.
Why not get a job in accounting that’s a better growing field than comp sci.

IT hiring is increasing and the computer engineer students are declining .
