What other career alternatives are there for someone already in IT?
I have been working in IT / computers for over 10 years, and up until a few years ago, really enjoyed working in this field. However, it seems things have changed so much from 10 yrs ago (I’m not talking about changes in computer technology, but rather changes in overall direction — for example, the recent trend of focusing away from IT technology and operations, in favor of project management.) In general IMHO, IT has become much more “business-focused” than it has been in the past, although I myself enjoyed the technology side much more. One of the major reasons I got into IT was because of the “hands-on” component allowing you to learn by doing, which something I just don’t see in the current project management trend. Just wanted to ask if anyone who might have actually switched careers from working in IT, if they have any advice on what other careers they pursued as an alternative to working in the present IT environment? Thanks!
Thanks to those who already answered…just curious if anyone else has any input that they can share before the question closes?

The only people that I’ve know who left IT are now doing sales work for IT companies.
If you want to do hands on stuff try getting a technician’s position at a circuit city or best buy.

i worked for a large mining corporation for 5 years as a network admin. they scaled back and contracted to a company from Texas. i was offered a position for far less pay so i went out on my own and opened a computer repair shop. business has been good and i now do a lot of consulting for small businesses in the region i live in. i build and maintain small networks and am having a blast doing it. i also build high end gaming machines and sell the software and hardware to support them. my income is substantially better and with my employees i can take time to enjoy things that a 60+ hour work week did not let me do. I’m also kind of proud that i have created 11 good paying full time jobs that were not here 2 years ago.
best of luck to you!

Great question! Changing careers can be scary but exciting. Do something you love. Sit down and make a list of what you are looking for in your next job then find a career coach to help mold your resume to make you look more qualified for a position in another field. You are qualified for a lot more than you think and a professional can help expose those qualities.
Best of Luck!
